         COMMUTING ABOVE THE TRAFFIC

A plan and map for a San Diego mass transportation system that links the Gaslamp District, San Diego Convention Center, Airport, Cruise Terminal, Zoo, Balboa Park, Sea World and the central Marina business section to residential areas of North Park, Hillcrest, San Diego State University, Mission Valley, UCSD, Poway, Coronado and Escondido with a high speed Twenty-First Century commuter system is proposed.

The website promotes elevated monorail transportation in San Diego as the mass transit commuter system best suited for relieving growing surface vehicular traffic, parking problems and the resulting air pollution.

Since the initial 2005 publication of this website, related changes in San Diego area commuting have been significant population growth, the increase in vehicle traffic, increased cost of gasoline to over $4.00, increased cost of parking and the Airport Commission proposal to increase airport auto traffic with a five story garage. The rapid increase in these factors demands aggressive action to reduce negative impacts on local economy.  Because the space in which a monorail operates is primarily in the air over public streets, existing transit and terrain conflicts don't occur, and acquiring property with related legal delays of imenant domain conflicts would be minimized. The system offers the prime choice for getting additional mass transit capabilities into operations in possibly half the time for an alternate light rail.

Why do we continue to invest millions on roadways and parking infrastructure that confine city wide public access to use of automobiles and busses while costs for their operation are skyrocketing and the environmental impact increases?  Even elimination of 3:00 AM train whistles is still two years away. The five story parking garage recently proposed for the airport can only add to traffic and carbon emissions.

Do we have people today like those who saw the need and organized the Electric Rapid Transit Company to provide San Diego with the first electric streetcars on the West Coast in 1887?  Where are today’s private financing entrepreneurs such as those who built a new toll road because it was needed and could be financially sound?  And those who recognize that there is place for mass transit that does not require major eminent domain legal delays and costs, is timely, environmentally positive and both neighborhood and rider friendly?

Based on actions to date, we cannot depend on a San Diego City Council and SANDAG for the creative planning needed to solve county wide traffic and parking problems, and relieve commuters of the hours they spend burning $4.50 plus gasoline on snail paced freeways. This website proposes a plan that can provide a way to make a major improvement in these problems.
