ABOUT MONORAILS The first operating monorail was opened in 1901 and is operating today in Wuppertal Germany. It carries as many as 70,000 riders a day and reaches 35 MPH with 20 stations on the 8 ¼ mile route. It is a suspended train system. (It has been rebuilt since the web site Engineer passed below a damaged section in an Intelligence and Reconnaissance platoon jeep in 1945) Alweg built the Disneyland system in 1955 and later offered Los Angeles a system serving the San Fernando Valley, the San Bernardino corridor and the Wilshire area to downtown in 1963. Alweg would share risk and finance construction. It was turned down by the LA City Council. The one mile Seattle monorail was built in conjunction with their Worlds Fair and is being profitably operated by a private company today. Monorail systems provide a significant percent of the Japanese commuter transportation and are being expanded in many Asian countries. The ADVANTAGES OF MONORAILS page on this web site provides a brief summary of why monorails are the best solution for San Diego transit growth. Only elevated monorails offer viable future additional commuter transportation through the communities it serves without dividing the and over the extensive environmentally sensitive and protected areas to reach North San Diego cities needed to reduce freeway overload.. The web site http://www.monorails.org provides a wealth of information and pictures of worldwide working monorail systems and extensive technical and comparative information.
