LAS VEGAS MONORAIL The Las Vegas monorail is now a functioning system carrying thousands of riders daily. It connects Las Vegas Strip hotels, casinos and show rooms along a seven and half mile system with seven stations. Four trains allow service on seven-minute intervals. The system is primarily designed for visitor movement among the primary Las Vegas attractions. It is not at present a commuter system designed to connect outlying communities. As it was privately financed by the hotel/casino interests, with exception of the Convention Center station, the only access to the boarding stations is through an adjoining casino. This is a natural restraint on use by local commuters. The system is an expansion of a two-station monorail with several years of operations experience and there are movements to extend it into the business district of the city. This would necessitate making the system more commuter friendly. To accommodate future Las Vegas transit needs as one of the largest growth rate cities in the US, the seven-station monorail could provide a core system with operating experience and proven hardware reliability that would make introduction to commuter riders a welcomed success.
