LONG TERM PLANNING
The long term plan is to interconnect major core San Diego residential locations, buildings and attractions with fast, clean and safe transportation in a phased manner that can be implemented and expanded as the funds and experience allow, and as the public recognizes the advantages of 21st-century-transportation over existing 19th and 20th century transport. The sequence described herein is based upon observations of present situations that are likely to change with time.
Phase 1, BEGINNING, addresses the parking and traffic problems relating to Petco Park, particularly when there is an event of significance in the Convention Center, and related parking problems of Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo.
Phase 2, ENBARCADERO/AIRPORT, addresses the monorail contribution to development of Seaport Village, the Embarcadero, the cruise ship terminal and access to San Diego International Airport.
Phase 3, UPTOWN, extends the route up Park Blvd to El Cajon Blvd, and then to a station located close to the intersection of El Cajon Blvd and I-15.
Phase 4, SDSU, continues phase 3 to the transit center at SDSU. This would significantly reduce auto traffic from northeast of the core city, and provide a convenient transport for SDSU students living in downtown and North Park areas.
Phase 5, HILLCREST, connects the UCSD Hospital in Hillcrest to the downtown shopping area, Petco Park and terminates at the Convention Center Hub
Phase 6, SEA WORLD / MISSION BAY, connects the large parking area in Mission Bay to the airport for long term parking, and connects Sea World to San Diego Downtown
Phase 7, CORONADO, connects the Naval Air Station to the mainland. It relieves Coronado Bridge traffic and provides a magnetic tourist attraction.
