MONORAILS:  PROVEN TRANSIT FOR COMMUTING

While many think of monorails as a Disneyland ride, the Disney World monorail is an economic entity in the resort. It's 13.6 mile system carries an average of over 150,000 passengers a day and has outstanding safety and equipment availability records. It is an important element in getting visitors quickly from one entertainment and hotel center to another and allow them more time to spend their money. It represents a proven technology for a financially efficient mass transit system, not a theme park ride.

The proposed core San Diego system, without Coronado and North County extensions, is approximately 27 miles in length. Consider what ability to eliminate 150,000 otherwise auto commuters a day would mean to San Diego traffic and parking problems. Consider what moving parking equivalent of a proposed five story airport garage to the Mission Bay area with easy access to both Interstates 5 and 8 would do to improve Harbor Drive traffic and make the embarcadero area more people friendly .

Monorail systems are being used in cities around the world to solve traffic problems and allow commuters a fast, pleasant and safe transit to their destination. Seattle and Las Vegas, two cities in the United States, already have years of experience with monorails for public transportation, although each has significant short comings.

An above the traffic Monalrail system providing fast, transport connecting San Diego's widespread business, educational, residential, entertainment and tourist attractions is a financiallyb sound way for taking maximum advantage of these assets without unacceptable environmental and quality of life constructiona  and operations impact on neighborhoods it serves and through which it travels.

Today's monorail technology offers the means to connect key areas of business, residential, education and entertainment with safe enjoyable commute, free of surface level congestion and delays. Monorail transportation can provide economically sound extension to areas beyond the canyons and wetlands that otherwise would incur environmentally unacceptable crossing. This website proposes a pattern of interconnected routes where monorail systems can take San Diego into twenty first century transit without disturbing present traffic arteries and dividing neighborhoods.

A VISION for SAN DIEGO for how monorail commuting can provide the best solution to many of San Diego's traffic problems and a PLAN of how it could be implemented in a step by step fashion are presented here. A click of the mouse will introduce you to this vision of twenty first century transportation and a place for it in San Diego.
