STRUCTURES Where possible, uniform station platform structures provide the most cost effective design, but in locations where the station is serving an existing building or structure, individualized designs are necessary. System planners must resist the attempts to make each station a neighborhood public art project, or costs will get totally out of control. The goal must be providing economical commuter transportation. Structures presented in this section include an iconic bridge structure over the harbor to Coronado island and the military base for the Coronado route extension that presents a challenge to creative designers to provide San Diego with a spectacular addition to its harbor. The concept displayed provides design feasibility and a taking off place for a visionary architect/engineer. The Balboa Park structure offers sixteen acres of additional park recreation area and a solution to the severe parking problems of the park and zoo while costing less than half per vehicle space of the consultant proposed in-park underground spaces. It also spares the park and zoo a year or more of disruptive construction of the underground spaces. It relates to the monorails system because the capacity would allow it to serve as an off-site parking area for many of the entertainment and recreation sites served by the system. All stations require easy access to boarding level for handicapped riders, and elevators, escalators, fare dispensers, automated gates to platform and trains, security and safety surveillance installations. Elevated monorail stations can easily provide weather protection and should include this comfort for the riders. Updated 6-15-2008 Copyright 2004-2008 SDMonorail.
